Eliezer Parrilla

New York, NY

Eliezer Parrilla stands as a multifaceted visual creator, with a career spanning over four decades across various artistic disciplines. From painting and sculpture to printmaking and photography, Parrilla’s body of work is a testament to his boundless creativity and exploration. At the heart of his artistic endeavors lies a deep-seated fascination with the intersection of natural and technical sciences, manifesting abstractly and materially in his compositions.

Born in Harlem, New York City, in 1950, Parrilla’s artistic journey began to take shape during his teenage years in Puerto Rico. He returned to New York in 1970 to pursue degrees in education at Brooklyn College and Long Island University, later delving into architecture at Pratt Institute. Influenced by luminaries such as playwright Herminio Vargas-Tollents and architects like Barbara Neski, Parrilla’s formative years laid the groundwork for his diverse artistic expression.

Parrilla’s career path seamlessly merged his passion for art with education, incorporating innovative teaching methods that anticipated modern interdisciplinary approaches like S.T.E.A.M. His classroom projects, infused with art and technology, offered students a unique blend of mathematical, architectural, and engineering concepts, exemplified by his pioneering work in paper tessellation techniques.

Parrilla’s art has graced the walls of prestigious institutions and galleries, from museums in Puerto Rico like El Museo Francisco Oller to renowned New York venues such as the World War II Memorial at Brooklyn’s Cadman Plaza and Galería Ollantay. Currently based in New York State’s Hudson Valley, Parrilla’s work continues to captivate audiences across the Woodstock and Kingston areas, with exhibitions at esteemed venues like The West Strand Gallery, The Storefront Gallery, and WAAM (Woodstock Artists Association Museum).

Beyond his exhibitions, Parrilla’s impact extends into private collections and academic circles. His original works and posters adorn numerous private collections, while his conference poster for The New York State Association for Bilingual Education (NYSABE) holds a place of honor in the research materials of Tomås Ybarra-Frausto at the Smithsonian Latino Center.
