Brian Reynolds Bosworth

1921 American Painter

Brian Reynolds BosworthBRIAN REYNOLDS BOSWORTH was born and raised on a small farm in rural SW Michigan. As an adult he has lived and worked in large urban places –– Washington DC, Boston, Seattle, and New York City, as well as in Central and South America. He feels some influence from all those places in his painting today. He paints now in Door County, Wisconsin, which he finds reminiscent of his rural upbringing, and in New York City, which he thankfully doesn’t find at all like rural Michigan.

Bosworth paints mostly with cold wax and oils and sometimes with pigmented hot wax also known as encaustics. He often incorporates other materials such as sand or marble dust or even plaster to offer texture and relief. He paints on wood panels and on microfiber cloth strong enough to support the multiple layers of wax and paint. He sees his work as abstract, tactile, and non-objective and emphasizes shape, color, marks, and texture. He rarely uses artist brushes, preferring squeegees, scrapers, brayers, or just his fingers and hands. He uses many tools that might be used in molding clay or sculpting.
